House rules
1. No money. Ever.
On Ruilmarkt you trade one good for another. There is no price, no bidding, no topping up and no amount going through the bank. So do not put a price in your text and do not ask for one in a message either.
Anyone who brings money into it is removed. Come across something like that? Use “Report this item” at the bottom of the listing.
2. Say honestly what it is
Describe the condition as it is, scratches and faults included. An honest description prevents disappointment at handover.
3. Say what you want in return
That field is required. “Make me an offer” is allowed, but something concrete draws more replies.
4. Give a trade value
Not in money, but in a class with examples, from Trifle (a book, a mug) to Exceptional (a trailer, a caravan). That way people find trades both sides gain from.
5. Put your spot on the map, not your address
The map rounds your spot to about a hundred metres and shows a circle. Do not put a street or house number in the description; arrange that in a message.
6. Not everything may be traded
No weapons, no medicines, no live animals, no stolen goods, nothing that needs a licence and nothing that breaks the law.
7. Meet safely
Choose a place where you feel comfortable and bring someone along if that feels better. Do not share payment details - you do not need them here.
What do we do with your data?
What you put up yourself is public: your display name, your items, your town and the circle on the map. Your phone number only appears if you switch it on, and only after a visitor clicks it. Your email address is not visible to others. Photos are resized and stripped of hidden data, such as where the photo was taken.
This site runs on its own server. Map images are served by that server itself, so your browser does not have to go to another party for them.
When you list an item we suggest a category and a trade value. That happens entirely on this server, with a word list; your text does not leave the house.
